Since 1600, Kumamoto’s shibu-uchiwa fans have been crafted with washi paper coated in persimmon tannin, making them durable, long-lasting, and naturally insect-repellent. More than everyday tools, they are considered auspicious gifts — “Kuremin” (来民) meaning “people will come,” a symbol of prosperity.
Kurikawa Shoten is the last workshop carrying this 400-year-old tradition, once counted among Japan’s three great uchiwa-making regions. Today, their fans are treasured as meaningful gifts for weddings, anniversaries, and life’s milestones.
