Shibu-Uchiwa Hand Fans
Kumamoto, Japan · Kurikawa Shoten

Handcrafted in Kumamoto, shibu-uchiwa fans have been made since 1600, when the technique was first introduced by a monk from Marugame. Each fan is made with strong washi paper coated in persimmon tannin (kakishibu) - a natural finish that makes the paper tougher, more durable, and long-lasting, while also offering insect-repellent qualities.

Beyond their practical use for cooling, shibu-uchiwa have long been considered auspicious objects. The name of their origin, Kuremin (来民), can be read as “people will come”, symbolising prosperity and good fortune. Because of this, they have traditionally been given as gifts for milestones - from the birth of a child to weddings, anniversaries, or company celebrations.

Kurikawa Shoten is the last workshop continuing this 400-year-old craft in Kumamoto, once celebrated alongside Kyoto and Marugame as one of Japan’s three great uchiwa-making regions. Each fan carries both the heritage of Japanese handcraft and a timeless charm that makes it as meaningful today as it has been for centuries.
