From Stone to the Table: 1616 / arita japan at JDV

From Stone to the Table began with a simple material fact: porcelain starts with stone. Presented at JDV Market, the exhibition looked at 1616 / arita japan through the transformation of raw mineral matter into plates, bowls and cups made for everyday use.

Arita's porcelain history reaches back more than four centuries. Across that history, stone has been crushed, refined, formed and fired into objects that can be remarkably thin yet durable. 1616 / arita japan works from this inherited technical knowledge while asking what Arita porcelain can look and feel like in contemporary daily life.

Rather than separating craft from use, the exhibition followed the material all the way to the table — where precision, colour, proportion and repeated handling become part of ordinary routines.

Light, strong, and made to be lived with

One of the ideas running through the exhibition was contradiction. 1616 / arita japan can look visually restrained, yet the objects are not intended to be handled cautiously. Their refinement comes from control of material, thickness, proportion and firing rather than from fragility as an idea.

What appears delicate in the hand is made to move through ordinary routines: breakfast, coffee, a shared dish, dessert, a table set for friends.

That matters at JDV because we are interested in objects that gain meaning through repeated use. Porcelain is most fully understood not at a distance, but when the same plate, bowl or cup returns to the table again and again.

From exhibition to archive

From Stone to the Table was one chapter in JDV's ongoing relationship with 1616 / arita japan. The exhibition asked visitors to look past the finished object and consider the material, decisions and regional knowledge that make everyday porcelain possible.

The exhibition has ended, but the collection continues at JDV. For a closer look at the three design languages we currently carry — TY Standard, S&B Colour Porcelain and MANZ Contour — read our guide to 1616 / arita japan.
