A Guide to KAJIdonya: Japanese Stainless Steel Kitchen Tools from Tsubame-Sanjo

KAJIdonya (家事問屋) is a Japanese household-tool brand created in 2015 by Shimomura Kihan, a company based in Tsubame, Niigata. Its products are developed with makers across the Tsubame-Sanjo region, one of Japan's best-known centres for metalworking.

The starting point is deliberately familiar. KAJIdonya looks at tools already used in everyday kitchens, listens to how people actually use them, and adjusts size, shape, material and construction where there is room to make the task easier.

The result is a range that often looks straightforward at first: bowls, strainers, trays, tongs, ladles and small utensils. The difference becomes clearer in use, where a narrower whisk suits a smaller bowl, a tray doubles as a lid, or a strainer is shaped around one particular job. The KAJIdonya Cooking Tray System

KAJIdonya's Cooking Tray System is less about choosing a single tray and more about building a working surface around the way you prepare food.

JDV carries four proportions: 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/2 Long. The sizes relate to each other, so smaller pieces can sit neatly with larger ones. Matching trays, deeper containers, mesh strainers and wire racks can also be combined for draining, resting, cooling and temporary storage.

The flat stainless-steel tray can hold cut ingredients during preparation, carry food to the table, sit beneath a rack for draining, or act as a lid for the corresponding container. KAJIdonya also leaves the tray edge without a rolled rim, reducing places where water and residue can collect during washing.

1/1 is the largest format for larger batches or a broader prep surface. 1/2 is the most versatile middle size for everyday preparation. 1/4 is compact for garnishes or ingredients that need to stay separate. 1/2 Long keeps a narrow footprint while extending the length.

Small tools for one specific job

Some of KAJIdonya's most distinctive products are also the simplest.

The Citrus Squeezer is designed for a wedge of lemon or sudachi: close the hinged form around the fruit, press, and the juice pours through the bird-shaped spout while the serrated divider helps catch seeds.

The Mini Whisk is designed for small quantities such as egg, dressing or cocoa, with fine stainless-steel wires that work inside smaller bowls and cups. The larger Slim Whisk uses a narrow shape but thicker wires, making it better suited to whipping cream, meringue or slightly heavier mixtures while keeping splashing under control.

The same idea runs through the Citrus Peeler, Can Opener, Jam & Butter Spatula, Grater Plate, Condiment Grater, Bag Cutter and Oil Brush. Each is narrow in purpose, but that specificity is often the reason it earns a permanent place in the kitchen.

Why stainless steel works across the range

Stainless steel appears throughout much of the KAJIdonya range because it suits repeated kitchen use. Many of the brand's core tools use 18-8 stainless steel, a material that is durable, easy to wash and less prone to retaining colour or odour from food.

The material also allows KAJIdonya to keep many forms thin and compact without making them feel disposable. On products such as the Cooking Tray System, details like an unrolled edge make cleaning part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Where to start with KAJIdonya

If you are new to KAJIdonya, start with the task you repeat most often.

For everyday prep: begin with a Prep Bowl / Strainer set.

For larger cooking sessions: the Cooking Tray System creates a flexible base for preparing, draining, cooling and storing ingredients.

For washing vegetables and larger quantities: the Side-Spout Bowl & Strainer Set gives more capacity and controlled drainage.

For small repeated jobs: the Citrus Squeezer, Mini Whisk, Tasting Spoon or Condiment Tongs show KAJIdonya's design approach in its most compact form.

The range makes the most sense when products are chosen around an action rather than simply collected as a matching set.
